This Monday night, 4.3 million TV viewers joined North America’s elite Primetime screen entertainers at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles to see who would take home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. But as fans of Jenna, we know that she was a winner even before she crossed the threshold. Consider this:
- Jenna Ortega is the first Latina to land a leading Emmy nomination since 2008.
- Jenna Ortega is the second-youngest person to be nominated in this category.
- Jenna Ortega is the youngest Latina acting nominee of all time.
So how was Jenna taking in the history of the moment? In interviews before the event, here is a compilation of what she said:
“It’s a lot. It definitely was very unexpected and I’m so so grateful. I feel so lucky to even be here. So, to come into this under those terms is really really special. And I got to bring my mom here tonight. It’s very surreal and I feel very lucky. Of course it would mean so much [to win, but] I’m happy as is to be nominated. I never really saw something like this for myself. I think sometimes I focus so much on my work. I’ve been doing this since I was so little that—when you’re shooting, you’re not thinking about ‘Ah, I’m going to get nominations’ or anything for this, so when they do happen, it’s such a pleasant surprise. It’s such an honor. And I’m in an insane category. I respect the women that I’m with so much. So, I’m happy. I feel good. I feel like I’ve already won. It’s great.”
Although Jenna did not take home a statuette this time, we’re still immensely proud of her. And we know that in the future, there will be more nominations to come.
