Christina Ricci, who appears alongside Jenna in Season 1 of Tim Burton’s Wednesday, has shared her insights on why the beloved Addams Family character has evolved beyond her portrayal.
Well before Christina became part of the Wednesday series, she epitomized the original live-action depiction of Wednesday Addams in the 1991 blockbuster The Addams Family and in the 1993 sequel Addams Family Values. Over three decades later, Ricci feels that the character is now synonymous with Jenna Ortega.
“Jenna is so good, and her characterization is so good,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter.
“And it really is different than what I was doing. The last time I played this part, I was 12. I’m now 44 years old, so I don’t have a feeling of ownership over the character the way that I think some people might imagine,” she says. “Wednesday’s been played by many different people over the years. I’m not comparing it to Shakespeare, but you know how lots of people have played Juliet? It’s like that.”
Christina Ricci’s character Marilyn Thornhill will not return for Season 2 of Wednesday. Currently, she is filming the second season of Yellowjackets, which is expected to be released in 2025.
